To ensure the quality and authenticity of New Zealand mānuka honey exports, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) enforces strict regulations, including a robust scientific definition used to authenticate genuine New Zealand mānuka honey.
The honey used in the sachets, has been tested against the requirements of the MPI definition and meets the classification to be labelled as NZ Mānuka honey.
In addition to meeting the MPI definition to be labelled as NZ Mānuka honey, the bulk honey has also been independently certified for quality factors including authenticity, and purity against the grading system of the Unique Mānuka Factor™ Honey Association. The honey used in the sachets has been rated UMF22+.
Prior to release, samples of finished product are independently tested for a range of chemical, microbial and organoleptic parameters to ensure they meet the requirements set out within specifications.
The sachets must also comply with all relevant NZ regulations, and those of the importing country.
Throughout the supply chain, all honey processors are required to meet the requirements under the Food Act 2014. This includes regular, independent audits to verify compliance to their Risk Management Programme (RMP) as required under New Zealand legislation.
